D arling, what do you want? What gifts and talents do you want to share with the world?  What do you need to lean into in order to fall head over heels in love with your life?

If you’re like many, the answer to this question is “I don’t know.”

I’m going to let you in on a little secret: your heart of hearts already knows what you want.  The thing is, if you’ve stuffed down your desires with thoughts like “I don’t deserve it” or “that’s impractical” or “later” or “I should be doing” and “I should want” …then it’s possible your heart is just buried under layers and layers of clutter.

You see, what’s often happening is that our hearts, minds, and souls are not in agreement about what we need in order to feel as if we’re on the right path. Then our minds take over and begin stuffing our worlds with shadow desires. We feel compelled to fill our lives with something.

We feel like something is missing, so we get a new pair of shoes, and soon we discover we’ve filled our closets with clothes and shoes we will never wear.  We comfort ourselves with food. We surround ourselves and fill our spaces with knick knacks to fill the holes our heart has.

We hear the faint whispers of our heart, but don’t believe what our heart is saying, so we fill our schedules to the brim with activities, effectively quieting our heart because we find ourselves too exhausted to listen.

We can’t pinpoint what our next step is, so we look to the external world for what others are doing, and mimicking their steps as a semblance of guidance. Only to ask ourselves, “Now what?”

“In order to seek one’s own direction, one must simplify the mechanics of ordinary, everyday life.” ~ Plato

Let me tell you something, kitten:  if you’ve been surrounding yourself with stuff in order to fill the longings of your soul, yet find yourself barely liking – let along loving – your life, then darling, it’s time.

Time to peel away the layers of clutter that have silenced the voices of your heart.

The first step for many of us is to begin clearing the physical clutter from our worlds.  I know it sounds simplistic.  How is cleaning your closet and getting rid of those dishes you despise going to help you lean into a life you love?

It’s all about the energy, baby!

You see, everything has energy.  From the cup from which we drink our coffee to the outfit we wear to work to our beautifully made bed.  Yep, even the stack of neatly folded laundry has energy.   We need the energy in our lives to focus on our work, for our dreams, for challenges and for staying healthy.

Every time we encounter something in our world that is undone, incomplete, or overdue, our energy to focus on what matters the most is drained.

Every time you have to push aside the clothes in your closet that you don’t like to find something to wear, you lose energy.  Every time you sift through a stack of papers on your desk, you lose energy.  And, yes.  Those dirty dishes in the sink, the crud on your refrigerator shelves, and that pile of magazines on your coffee table all drain your focus and that precious energy of yours.

Every time you open a drawer and have to look for something, your mind refocuses.  It turns to the task of finding scissors and distracts you from writing that chapter of your book, that blog post, that sales letter or the perfect line of a song.

And there’s more than energy at work.

You see, everything has our thoughts and emotions embedded within it. Old furniture we don’t love, clothes we don’t wear, and china we hate is no exception to this.

When we hold onto clutter, we’re telling our subconscious minds that our stuff is more important than our true desires.

If you believe that the solution to creating a life you love is to change your wardrobe, buy a new house, or lose 20 pounds, then let me be frank with you, my dear:  Creating a life you love will be clearer when you first remove what’s blocking the road.

When you remove those blocks, then the life force, creativity, and abundance can flow freely to you and through you. Because, darling before you add anything it’s critical to get crystal clear about what you want.

Darling, life is short and you deserve to spend it marching along the path to loving your life, not tripping over a pile of shoes.
